Course Overview

The course can be delivered using 1 of the following 3 structures:
Daytime Classes –  4 1/2 days teaching and completion of tasks within a classroom – 8:30am till 4:00pm
Evening Classes – 12 evenings (every Thursday) teaching and completion of tasks within a classroom – 6:00pm till 9:00pm
Weekend Classes – 4 1/2 days (Saturday & Sundays) teaching and completion of tasks within a classroom – 8:30am till 4:00pm
Assessment Criteria –  
  • Task A – Visual Inspection – 30mins
  • Task B – Periodic Inspection and Test – 2hrs and 30mins 
  • Task C – Short Answer Questions – 1hr and 20mins
  • 2 Hour On-Line exam completed at our training centre. – 120 minutes to answer 60 multiple choice questions using the BS 7671, Guidance Note 3 and On-Site-Guide books.
Certification – On successful completion of the course you will be awarded with the City & Guilds, Level 3, 2391-52, Initial and Periodic Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations Qualification.

Entry Requirements:

This course is for candidates who have previously achieved a nationally recognised qualification. You should have experience of single phase and 3 phase systems and have some familiarity with completing certification and/or reports. 
We strongly recommend City and Guilds 2382 is achieved prior to sitting this course, though this is NOT an entry requirement. All candidates must be at least 18 years of age.

Course Content:

The course will cover the current requirements of BS 7671 relating to inspection and testing techniques as given in IET Guidance Note 3. It covers methods of inspection and testing all types of installations as set out by BS 7671 and how to complete the required certification and reports to a professional standard. 
The course will cover the following key areas:
  • Requirements of Electricity at Work Regulations
  • Requirements for safe isolation
  • Requirements for initial verification of electrical installations
  • Requirements for periodic inspection and testing
  • Safe testing and commissioning of electrical installations
  • Requirements for testing before circuits are energised
  • Requirements for testing energised installations
  • Interpretation of test results
  • Commissioning electrotechnical systems and equipment
  • Documentation, certification and reporting
The course will cover the following testing methods relating to single phase and 3 phase systems:
  • Continuity of protective conductors
  • Continuity of ring final circuit conductors 
  • Insulation resistance
  • Polarity
  • Earth electrode resistance
  • Polarity and phase sequencing
  • Earth fault loop impedance including Ze, Zdb and Zs
  • Prospective fault current
  • RCD
  • Phase sequencing
  • Functional testing
  • Verification of voltage drop.
